You're treading a dangerous path with this line of thinking.
What you seem to be saying is, cyclists have been ignoring the highway code and breaking the law for so long that the public have come to accept it as the norm, and that is the way that you would prefer it to be.
It's not much different to someone who takes a newspaper from the rack outside a shop every day and does not pay for it.
After getting away with it for months, when he's eventually caught he screams that he should not be prosecuted, as no one had taken any notice of his transgressions until someone was synthetically outraged by them.

Here's the answer to all our problems... effective and artistic...

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howaboutthat/5563986/Cyclists-slow-down-to-avoid-crater-sized-hole.html

Cyclists slow down to avoid crater-sized 'hole'

Cyclists were encouraged to slow down thanks to this crater-sized "hole" in the middle of a towpath.

But the hole is an optical illusion, a three-dimensional drawing of a canyon, in an attempt to make careless cyclists hit the brakes rather than ride dangerously and ignore pedestrians.

The pavement art, the work of Joe Hill and Max Lowry, who specialise in three-dimensional images, was commissioned by British Waterways and was installed along the Regent's Canal towpath in Islington, North London.

Mr Hill and Mr Lowry have been working on street art together for around five years.

While cyclists slowed down to avoid the hole, British Waterways staff were there to advise on safe cycling.

The company will keep the image, unveiled to mark national bike week, for use in other areas.

Joseph Young, British Waterways' towpath manager, said: "The majority of cyclists share the space amicably.

"However, there are a handful who refuse to slow down. That's why we commissioned this art - we hope it will shock."

Mr Young, who covers the city's 100 miles of rivers and canals, said; "As a cyclist myself I can definitely say this isn't about trying to restrict access to the towpaths for bikes - it's about appropriateness.

"The towpaths are often narrow and are full of historic furniture such as low bridges, lock landings and bollards, all of which are part of the charm of the canal, but aren't ideal for cyclists who need to get somewhere in a hurry."

Ooh I can see this thread has moved on considerably since I last posted.

To clarify for one earlier contributor (name beginnin with z) - I did wheel my bike to Hays Galleria then got back on. I did nothing to upset the guy in the suit who clearly had anger issues I simply cycled past him at slightly faster than walking pace givhing him a wide berth!!

I am a very considerate cyclist and also car driver and pedestrian (often along the South Bank). If the are is particularly crowded with pedestrian then I GET OFF MY BIKE!!

Interestingly and ironically today I was asked to get off at City Hall, which I did. Various pressure groups were demonstrating against the idea of introducing Naked Roads in Exhibition Road where cars, cycles and pedestrian all share the same space.

Will be interesting too see if footage of this shows Boris cycling along the area outside City Hall!!! Which again ironically probably has one of the widest paved areas along the river.

The area I live in (Surrey Quays) has many paths shard between cyclists and pedestrians and there doesn't seem to be a problem. They co-exist quite happily.

A jogger actually ran into the back of my bike while I was wheeling it across Blackfriars Road at the crossing outside Southwark tube station. I appreciate that I was taking up more than my fair share of space as I had my bike, but it was really busy so he would have had difficulties getting around all the people, and there was only a space around me because I had my bike, everywhere else was packed. I also had my helmet on, and I'm a little fat woman in a flouresent jacket with a lilac mountain bike, so I'm quite hard to miss (except on Tooley Street, where all cyclists are invisible to all pedestrians).

He was really abusive, and I was quite taken aback, but of course I understand now that it was because I was in breach of the above rule and it was all my fault, which does clear it up a bit.

oooo, my laptop didn't like that at all, I won't try it again! I'm not even clear why there is a num lock key on a laptop, when I think about it.

In an attempt to be more interesting for Jane I shall tell you how I fell off my bike. I was cycling past East Street and it was really messy with rubbish blowing around. A carrier bag got sucked into my gears, and completely wrapped itself in them, throwing me off.

Those little cogs on the back wheel were bent into the wheel, and something else snapped. When I took it in to be repaired they stared in amazement at what I'd done, it looked a real mess.

The worst thing is that as I lay there, completely bemused as to what had happened, more rubbish blew onto me, and a cardboard box that was blowing around hit me.

Even when I was sat on the side of the road trying to fix it (the carrier was in the way and I couldn't at that point see why I couldn't move the back wheel), more rubbish was blowing at me, it was really bad. Of course, 5 minutes after this the bin men arrived to clean up.

However, I am glad that toilet is there as my hands were filthy, probably from touching one of the dirtieist road in Southwark!

On a positive note, I didn't rip my jeans or fall in dog poo, both of which had gone through my mind as a concern as I fell...lol
