Southern Forge was recommended here, so I contacted them and realised then, that it was them I had phoned last year as well, when no-one called me back.

I thought there must have been some weird mistake last year, so decided to give them a second chance. Now I spoke to a gentleman on the phone, who said he would give me a quote for security gates over the phone, if I called back. Did so, and got a quote, even if there was confusion as to whether I had given metric or imperial measures. A visit was arranged for the following day for proper measurements to be taken. Nobody turned up, all day. Phoned them again the following day, listened somebody arguing on the phone with someone else, while i was waiting. Then a female voice told me there was no entry in their diary of a visit to my place. So she arranged another one for yesterday, AM. And nothing.

So much for supporting local businesses, or maybe living 5 min away is not local enough for these people. Still looking for security gates...

I also live in Council property and I have had a grill door for about the last 8 or 9 years. I think it is a very good one it has an integral letter box that doesn't interfere with the main door because the letterbox itself stands "proud" of the grill door on the outside. It is a long letterbox and takes a newspaper standing on its end and is accessed from the inside, once the wooden door is opened, to retrieve your post. I am sorry if that sounds complicated but it really isn't. Also there is a latch opening system from the inside - so that makes for an easy exit. The leaflet also says it meets with Fire Brigade Recommendations and a patent had been taken out. From memory it cost just under £300. It is called 333 and the address was 366 Kingsland Road, E8 , the telephone number was 01 249 8829 and 01 254 1333 but they have moved and I don't know were to.
Oooh - I just found the brochure - it was pre 1990 - oh dear! Well it's still in good condition! I have checked the brochure and I think Triple Three must have been taken over as it is Tital Forge as from 6 May 1990: the phone number is 081 558 9000: address is Shaftesbury Road, London E10. Also I have just checked and they have a website

http://sites.yell.com/passport/goto/titanforgeltd1stcall1/home.html?nat_id=290041&mapable=true.

Doesn't time fly - it must have been about 15 years ago!

If you have the extra cash available, I would strongly recommend Sarah' option of having a door with integral bolts rather than a gate.

Two cautionary thoughts on gates:

(i) Make sure that the gate is designed to match your door - many cheap ones have letter box slots at funny heights that make it impossible for the postman to deliver anything larger than a DL sized envelope through your door, requiring you to regularly traipse to the sorting office for anything larger.

(ii) Make sure that you have a means of escape in the event of fire. You should consider a key box inside the door.

I took some specialist security advice when a flat I rent out had its door kicked in. (My dad used to be CID Commander in this area, so has contacts.)

I ended up with a really strong hardwood door, a French multi bold system manufactured by someone called Fichet on the lock side (you turn the key and the door is bolted at top bottom and three times in the middle into an integral steer door frame), and what I think is called a London bar on the hinge side which is essentially some metal to strengthen the original frame to prevent the door being jemmied from that side.

From the outside it looks like an ordinary door, and so does not advertise the fact that the resident is worried. But anyone trying to kick it in would end up with a pretty sore foot, and hopefully would go elsewhere.

I don't recall it being extortionate (in the context of preventing a nervous tenant from leaving) and it has impressed prospective tenants.
