Hi Kim

I will email you the details of how the group work, we do take it in to do each bit - cook a course, bring the wine or host (6 people) - but if you can not host you can join us on standby to step in when someone else can't make it.

It is good fun and a easy, economical way to enjoy good food and wine and meet new people and make friends, the groups change every month so you are not with the same six people at each dinner. We will be starting a new rota in Jan after a break in december. If anyone else is interested PM your email to me and I shall get in touch. New members always welcome.

The Foodies met for a belated September dinner on Saturday 2nd Oct., warming up with a spot of M&S Sparkling Pinot Grigio, and a Fabiano Proscecco!

Starter was fabulous home-made pasta parcels with pumpkin filling, together with sage and olive oil, which had delightfully subtle flavours, and was accompanied by Louis Chavy,(2008), Chablis, which went very well with it!

Boeuf Bourginon with celariac and potato mash was the main, washed down admirably with
appropriate Pinot Noirs in the form of Cote de Beaune-Villages,(Earl Roger Belland),2008, and a bottle of New Zealand Waipara West 2002.

The pudding was tattimasu/tiramasu which truly lived up to it's reputation as the very best, especially as it was accompanied by a very special Robert Mondavi Californian/Napa Valley, (Moscato D'Oro 2006),
and an equally lovely Maury, (Domaine Mas Mouriane 1969)!

As it was a very wet, wintery night we rounded off nicely with coffee and a little Genevre!

All that, with great conversations had by all!

The Cookies met last Saturday after a bit of an ordeal with the lack of hot water. Fortunately Clare offered that we could host from her flat, which allowed us to all meet.

We began the evening with a few Spanish nibbles and Champagne. The starter was a tasty warm rocket salad with pine nuts, red onions and pancetta with a balsamic dressing. We had two delicious white wines with the starter: a 2006 Pascal Bouchard Chablis Premier Cru Montmains and a 2007 Savennieres domaine du closel (Vicomtesse Des Vaults).

The main course was a braised duck leg served with puy lentils with cranberries, pancetta and herbs as well as steamed broccoli with dijon dressing, capers and shallots. The main course wines were a 2009 Beaujolais Cuvee Premiere de Jean-Paul Brun and a 2008 Brouilly Jean-Claude Lapalu.

For dessert we had a modern twist on bread and butter pudding using summer berries served with cream. It was a tasty light way to finish the meal. For pudding we drank a lovely 2009 Late Harvest Chardonnay Waipara West from New Zealand.

We finished the evening with a cheese plate with Stilton, Wigmore, Lincolnshire Poacher, and a Coolea. We also shared an interesting Old Sweet Oloroso which was aged for 30 years.

It was a good night and we are thankful for Clare's generosity.

The Winos had their September dinner last Saturday just off Long Lane. The evening began with Prosecco and chorizo and green olive pastry wheels (yes, we stole your delicious idea too, Brice!)

Jon and Carol's excellent starter was marrow stuffed two ways - with rosemary, lemon and parmesan and with couscous and chorizo. This was washed down by a very moreish sloe wine from Lyme Bay Winery and a Chilean Pedro Jimenez.

The main course was chicken teriyaki on a bed of shitake, bean sprouts and veg alongside a cucumber and wakame seaweed salad. The wine to accompany was an Italian Sangiovese and a Pinot Noir (sorry, can't remember but it was quite drinkable).

For pudding we had Chavender's lovely fruit salad made with elderflower liqueur, passion fruit and cinnamon with cream and Alison brought along two delectable stickies to wash it down - a Chilean late harvest Sauvignon Blanc and an Australian Semillon.

Another great SE1 evening - thanks to everyone.

The Winos met on Saturday evening and due to the awful weather ruling out an al fresco dining experience on my roof terrace, Alison generously offered me the use of her house, so we all decamped over there.

We started with anchovy puffs (idea stolen from Brice, thank you!) and a glass of champagne (sorry, I threw away all the wine bottles so can't tell you what it was! All I can say is that it was bubbly, dry and from Champagne!)

We then moved onto Alan and Patricia's starter - a delicious Pear, Date & Walnut Salad with creamy Stilton dressing. This was served with:
2007 Gruner Veltliner Schneiderberg, D.A.C. Weinviertel, Weingut Weinrieder
2008 Viognier, Vin de Pays d'Oc, Le Domaine de la Ferrandière, Yves Gau (Thank you for the reminder, Patricia!)

The main course was lamb shank (slow cooked in a kleftiko style) with a red currant sauce served on a bed on crushed marie piper and sweet potatoes with a side of green beans. This was served with a Jacob's Creek Cabernet Savignon Shiraz 2007 reserve and another red (apologies, can't remember!)

Pudding was a delicious blackberry (hand-picked by Jon R) and apple pie served with lashings of cream and icecream! This was 'helped down' by some of the SE1 forum cider and a bottle of rose!

Thanks to everyone for a really wonderful evening! xx

The August Gourmets met for a very international evening on Saturday and after some nibbles and Cava to get us going, we went on to enjoy:

Very delicious lightly grilled figs and jamon with toasted sourdough bread
accompanied by a quite quirky and very enjoyable american (Oregon) white wine called Evolution and a bottle of Terrasses Rose from the Rhone valley

The main course was lamb niosettes with mushroom stuffing, redcurrant and blueberry sauce, new potatoes and broccoli
complemented by 2 bottles of a lovely Chateau Mondeau bordeaux (2006)

I think it was around this time that we had a little tasting interlude with a bottle of the newest, and very lovely, extra dry champagne from Brice's family's champagne vineyard, Michel-Gentlhomme

We then moved on to a fab trio of desserts of Kentish Summer fruits: Cherry Clafoutis, Chantilly Crème with redcurrants, and a port and blueberry sauce

We finished off the evening with some nice cheese and a bottle of vintage port

The rump group (AKA Gourmets) also met last night, to a full complement. We forgot we were hosting until mid week and it turned out the only night we could all do was Saturday, so all rather rushed but all rose to the ocassion and we had a lovely evening!

Nibbles of retro devils on horseback and our banker of anchovy twirls to a bottle of Moet, and the family bubbles from Michel-Gentilhomme. We were graced with the presence of the maker's son (Brice's nephew and Godson, Corentin Michel-Gentilhomme, so our personal thanks to all for embracing Corentin who is 17 and only arrived from Paris that afternoon).

The starter was a lovely salad of red endive with gorgonzola, pear and walnut, accompanied by a bottle of Marlborough Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc '09, and a Vinalba Torrentes from Herve Fabre.

Our main of roast ribs of beef with gratin dauphinoise, carrot pure, beans and provencal vine tomatoes, was matched with a Brouilly 2008 by Jean-Claude Lapalu and a Penley Estate, Phoenix 2007 Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon (purchased from Cave, the new outlet on Bermondsey Street).

The dessert of Lime, lemongrass, yuzu, ginger and vodka syllabub with a topping of fresh summer fruits was delicious and paired with two bottles of Johann Zechmeister, Novemberles 2005.

We had a few cheeses and found in the wine rack a bottle of Bourgueil 2000 from Thibault Michel (no relation!). Absolutely lovely evening. Thanks to all.
Hi Carissa

We were full but one of our group seems to have disappeared without trace so may be able to fit you in and will certainly be able to add you to the reserves. I am really busy at work at the moment - the joys of being freelance - feast or famine but as soon as i get a chance i will send you more details (i am not at my own computer at the moment so do not have them to hand). In the meantime can you send me a private message with your email address so I can send them to you. Hope to meet you at a dinner soon.

Should have done this ages ago, so apologies. Thank you Jac for posting on my behalf. I have now regained use of my faculties after some serious drinking on the night. A very good time was had and thank you all for making it so.

Two things to add to Jac's report:
The wines for mains and dessert, if anyone is interested, were from a small local winery in Burgenland in Austria. Zweigelt and Blaufrankish. With our very delicious dessert we had Novemberlese.

We sadly burnt most of the crackling that went with the pork. But, apart from that mishap the dinner went very well, although in a blur of alcohol.

Looking forward to the next one. Any news on the July dinner?

The foodies met last week and a good time was had by all, but our fabulous host has not had time to post the menu (and I hear that due to the number of bottles we got through she sneaked the bottles into the recycling in the dead of night so as not to alarm her neighbours).

I cant remember all the details especially of the wine we drunk and now the evidence has gone I guess no one will but we enjoyed the following.

A light sparkling rose to start

Goats cheese, onion and tomato tartlets
2 bottles of Chilean sauvignon blanc - same wine but 2 vintages quite different

Slow roast pork with 5 spice, crunchy white cabbage salad and rice
a vast amount of red wine from Austria very delicious

Raspberry meringue Roulade
a dessert wine followed by more red wine

and some of us had some vodka as well at some point.

Rumour has it that the cookies are not having their June dinner until July so you will have to wait for the next dinner party circuit menu

I shall send you details of how the SE1 dinner club works and if you are still interested and live in se1 you are very welcome to join, although for the time being it will have to be as a reserve (more details in my email).
May 22nd - Delayed April Cookies Dinner

Starters (Maureen and James)
Proscuittio, mozzarella, basil
W: Lebanon mix of muscat, semillon, sauvignon
R: Croatian, related to Zinfandel

Mains (Declan and Plum)
Passoul - Serbian spicy smoked ham and butter bean stew
Cider
R: Corbieres Deux Fleurs

Desert (Karen and Sue)
Elderflower, prosecco and fruit terrine
R: Pedro Ximenez Gran Bargeno

Well after an peripatic start in bringing a date together with the Easter hols, we finallhy agreed a date and got a full complement with the welcome addition of Sue and Karen to the Cookies fold.

7pm First guests arrive, Karen, Maureen and James. We proceed to assemble and dissemle in the kitchen.

Sue and Plum arrive, join kitchen -garden machinations.

We start the evening taking the air in the garden with the white wine, while Maureen assembled a sensibly light starter to preceed the stodge bomb of the mains. James politely lets Declan inform him about the plants in the garden (Declan thinks that Declan is bearing an uncomfortably close relationship to holiday photo showing people who say -"this is the beach, and oh here's another of the beach, and here's ...." Aaargh must get a grip of myself!)

Mains proceed in between much washing up and guest assisted drying (thank you Plummers) of a bowl of passoul, bread and butter and cider or wine. Bar the oversized portions for one or two of my fellowette Cookies, mains went down pretty well.

More washing up (with Karen assisted drying - thankyou too) then desert. A delicate and inventive combination of blackberries, strawberries and other fruit in aspic with elderflower and procecco and a blob of creme fraiche on the side. Just the ticket.

Then desert wine, a rich, heavy incense/ Christmas pud like wine made from raison infused wine. (Not to be confused with sherry of the same grape type though).

That was pretty much bar coffee which one could walk on and all guest had tootled off by 1130pm.

Thanks to all my visitors for being such lovely guests.

Le Fin.
