Queen to visit Southwark on Millennium Eve

The Royal progress to Greenwich on Millennium night begins on Bankside with the arrival of the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh.

Her Majesty has asked to visit the Crisis cold weather shelter for the homeless in Southwark Street prior to taking part in the vigil of prayers and music at Southwark Cathedral. The Queen and Prince Philip will be present from 9pm for the first 30 minutes.

After lighting a Millennium Candle in the cathedral, the Queen will board a vessel bound for the Millennium Dome. Before passing under Tower Bridge the Queen will use a laser torch to light the Thames Beacon in the Pool of London.
