Abbey Street will be closed to traffic for the next three months whilst the historic railway bridge across the street is restored.

Abbey Street shut for three months for railway bridge restoration

The project – which is funded by section 106 payments from developments at Bermondsey Spa and a grant from the Railway Heritage Trust- includes painting, new lighting and paving.

The grade II listed structure is one of two surviving bridges from the London and Greenwich Railway which opened in 1836.

During the road closure – which is expected to last until 8 June – buses on route C10 are diverted via Grange Road, Tower Bridge Road, Bricklayers Arms and Great Dover Street, leaving Abbey Street and Long Lane without a bus service.
