Labour MP trains as teaching assistant at SE1 primary school

A Waterloo primary school has an unlikely new trainee teaching assistant - the Labour Member of Parliament for the Cumbrian town of Barrow in Furness.

John Woodcock MP is currently undertaking placements at Victoria junior school in Barrow and Oasis Academy Johanna in Waterloo while he works towards a level 3 qualification.

The Lower Marsh primary school is one of the closest schools to the Houses of Parliament.

The MP is training as a teaching assistant as part of his preparations for a new summer school he is helping to establish in his constituency to tackle low attainment in literacy and numeracy.

On his blog he describes the experience of helping to marshal a class of Waterloo children on a visit to the Sea Life London Aquarium on the South Bank.
