11 new shops and a cafe could be created at the Elephant & Castle junction if proposals to convert garage space below Perronet House get the go-ahead.

Elephant Arcade: plans for new shops at Perronet House garages

The council claims that the scheme would provide 'local convenience shops for people living and working in the area' and 'affordable retail spaces for local independent traders'; with priority going to traders displaced by the redevelopment of the Elephant & Castle Shopping Centre.

"Residents at Perronet House have spoken to me often about the anti-social behaviour that goes on in this empty space," said Cllr Stephanie Cryan, deputy leader of Southwark Council and cabinet member for housing.

"These proposals would not only help with this issue but contribute to making the streets safer by encouraging people to be in and around the area."

However, some residents contest the council's assertion that the garages are surplus to requirements.

In 2016 the St George's Pharmacy opened in a former garage space at Perronet House.

The latest scheme has been designed by Carl Turner Architects, the firm responsible for the controversial Pop Brixton scheme in Lambeth.
