Spot on

I agree - the pub is nice but the lady who runs the place is a bit of a sour-face! We went to a quiz recently and it was very poor.

SIMON THE TANNER CREW

Says it all, scottish lady does actually have a name if you had asked, people need to realise about what a proper pub actually is, good beer good food good staff, this pub ticks all 3. I have recently become a regular and cant believe any one would say anything bad about it, go to the ritz if you want your back side wiped. pub is spot on, perfect beer and all staff, scottish lady and mr butler all know their beer, and very very good food. If you have an issue let me know and we can ave it on the cobbles. LONG LIVE PROPER PUBS LIKE THIS.

Good beer...

I love the beer there but it is the shame about the food, other pub like the Goldsmith or Dean Swift offer quality food . Simon the tanner needs to improve. Do not go and complain to the owner (the scottish lady) as she does not take criticism very well!

Good Cooking

We usually call in for the excellent choice of beers but, a bit jaded after a US holiday, we ate in the bar. I risked a T bone (having just arrived back from steak-heaven) and my other half went for the fish and chips. Both were very good and my steak stood up to well to cross-pond comparisons.

We went for Sunday lunch just to try it. My partner had the roast lamb Sunday lunch, which was okay. I had the roast beef. Two slices of beef, one ropey bit hidden under the good slice. Carrots were rock hard, barely blanched, let alone cooked (and no, they weren't al dente, just not cooked). Gravy must have been in short supply too. Decor dull, as was the atmosphere.
On the plus side, the red cabbage was great, as were the Yorkshire puds.

Great steak sandwich

I was in the pub last night along with the rest of the SE1 book club, and enjoyed my open steak sandwich with home made chips. Very nice, I must say! Planning to return. Might try the Sunday roast again.

Poor food.

I had twice the roast lunch and I must confess it was poor. I went after having read the review on this website but was disappointed. I liked the crumble and the beer. They should have a look at Dean Swift to see what good pub food is.

Sunday roast hit the spot

Posted by juanita on Monday 30 April 2012

Excellent choice of Sunday roasts - I could not decide so I had the mix of beef, pork and chicken, which is a menu option. I was not disappointed. Very large plate of food arrived piping hot and it was all delicious. My friends & I all licked our plates clean! The landlady made us all feel very welcome and it appeared to be a baby-friendly pub as well.

It's back!

Simon the Tanner - recently re-opened, and I love it so far. It came to the rescue on Saturday night, when we didn't fancy staying in The Brittania round the corner. several ales on tap, nice new decoration, full of people - all good signs.
