The Pendle Witch Child

Wingspan Productions and BBC4 are making a documentary about the Lancashire Witches and will be staging a scene from an original 17th century play about the witches.

It's a rare chance to see a short extract from the play 'The Witches of Lancashire', written in collaboration by prominent Jacobean playwrights Thomas Heywood (A Woman Killed with Kindness, The English Traveller) and Richard Brome (A Jovial Crew, A Mad Couple Well Match'd)

This play was written and staged while the case was still ongoing, and assumed the guilt of the accused, who were in fact acquitted in 1634.

In the scene, a boy meets two dogs which turn into a witch and a demon-boy, and he is spirited away to a meeting of witches!

Presenter Simon Armitage will be there to watch the bizarre spectacle, to make what he will of it...
