This rarely performed anonymous opera, dating from about 1230, was performed as part of the medieval New Year Feast of Fools when subdeacons and young clerics to let their hair down in musical and theatrical festivities. The play combines exuberant burlesque elements with the mysteries of the story of the prophet Daniel, such as solving the Writing on the Wall, escaping the lions' jaws and prophesying the coming of Christ.
Music by Andrew Lawrence King and his Harp Consort.
