Lessing wrote his chamber comedy The Jews when he was twenty and working in the theatre in Leipzig. The play sought to promote religious toleration and emancipation for Jews. Globe Education commissioned Noel Clark to translate Die Juden in 1998 as part of its Shakespeare and the Jews season.
