This year Bernie Spain Gardens will feature a magical installation for the week leading into The Mayor's Thames Festival.
5,000 children from schools across London have collected plastic carrier bags and created colourful pompoms which will form the installation. On top of the pompoms is a mass of butterflies also made by the children from maps of their local school area. This beautiful display will be a graphic demonstration of the waste we produce in the UK. It also links the process of metamorphosis of caterpillars into butterflies with junk into art.
Children's workshops will run over the weekend making this an area where children and their families can learn about recycling and be inspired.
The Childrens Scrap Project in Hackney kindly donated additional scrap materials. For information about The Childrens scrap Project phone: 0208 985 6290.
