A hands on, creative activity providing an opportunity for children and families to handle Second World War binoculars, similar to those handled by HMS Belfast’s crew during her service; compare the view and conditions on the day of their visit with photography taken on the Flagdeck during the ship’s service in sub-zero temperatures; take part in signalling exercises including semaphore and signalling names in code and follow a ‘treasure trail’.
The crew were on constant alert for danger including German submarines, aircraft and battle cruisers as they appeared on the horizon. Belfast depended on the sharp sight of her men to keep her from harm. She also depended on the communication skills of her crew as they sent and received morse, flag or semaphore messages to and from other allied ships in sight.
