The Suburban Landscape

London Parks and Gardens Trust lecture by Elisabeth Lebas.

The suburb - as a distinct region between city and countryside - originated in the early nineteenth century. As transport links improved, suburban areas rapidly expanded and evolved, attracting a widening section of society. The Museum of Domestic Design & Architecture, Middlesex University (Cat Hill), is currently presenting an exhibition on the subject. Elizabeth Lebas, its curator, will investigate an area north of London to show how this development produced a characteristic landscape which mingled old and new design.
