The White Devil

This event is in the past. This is an archive page for reference.

The Menier Chocolate Factory's first production of a Jacobean Tragedy is a departure from the venue's strong history of musical productions. Directed by the acclaimed Jonathan Munby, The White Devil promises to be an intense and passionate production ideally suited to the intimate space.

When the adulterous Brachiano and Vittoria become involved in a dangerous affair, an explosive conclusion seems inevitable. In a corrupt and savage Italy, where no one is who they seem, the individual must fight for survival against the structures that define their very existence: the State, the Church and their own sense of right and wrong.

Based on actual events, Webster's haunting and brutal play delves into the darkest recesses of the human condition in this visceral and explosive celebration of poetry and theatre.

The renowned Jacobean playwright John Webster is also known for his dark tragedy The Duchess of Malfi. Director Jonathan Munby has worked extensively with the RSC, and in the West End, and most recently directed A Midsummer Night's Dream at Shakespeare's Globe.

Leading the cast are Claire Price in the role of Vittoria, Darrell D'Silva in the role of Brachiano and Aidan McArdle in the role of Flamineo. Claire has appeared in the West End in Don Carlos (Gielgud) and Brand (RSC; Haymarket). Darrell has performed in many productions for the RSC, playing Bottom in A Midsummer Night's Dream and the title role in Doctor Faustus. Most recently he performed in Royal Hunt of the Sun and The Rose Tattoo, both at the National Theatre. Aidan has most recently been seen in the film The Duchess and played the title role in Richard III for the RSC.
