Speed Surgery

Before antiseptic procedures were introduced into surgical practice, a bad bone fracture might require amputation.

Without anaesthesia that amputation would have to be swift. St Thomas' and Guy's Hospital surgeons were strong and taught students to give mercy to the patient and remove the limb as quickly as possible. Once permission had been granted, the patient must "Prepare to die...!"

Within the old operating theatre of 1822, the demonstrator will show these harsh, but essential surgical methods using an original 19th Century surgical kit.
