A proper old-fashioned wrestling movie here, given some star quality from a rejuvenated Mickey Rourke and the talented Darren Aronofsky. This is an immersive, emotional tale of an aging wrestler reaching the end of his career and explores the character in hard, serious detail. What could be a sentimental film is handled with a firm grip by Aronofsky rediscovering the form from the excellent Requiem for a Dream and creating one of the stand-out films of the year. Rightly compared to the likes of Raging Bull, and On the Waterfront, the film centres around Rourke's magnificent performance. Not to be missed.
