The interplay between blackness and light goes to the heart of the photographic experience. One draws you in, the other radiates energy. Both share an intensity and at the same time a subtlety that challenges the eye. This exhibition is a celebration of both.
With 46 images - some large scale - this show comprises black and white photographs of landscapes, portraits, interiors and still life. Among his subject matter are fish markets and the amazing durga puja in Kolkata, India; landscapes of the Isles of Skye and Anglessey; and Parisian café life.
George Nicholson has been taking photographs for over 40 years. This is his second show at the gallery following the success of Painting with Light in 2003. His book of photographs of craftsmen and women in Made in Southwark – a photographic celebration of the hand was published by Civic Books in 2005.
