Southwark historian Stephen Bourne will give an illustrated talk highlighting the wartime experiences of black (African Caribbean) women in Britain. Among those featured will be writer and broadcaster Una Marson and service women such as Connie Mark (ATS). There will be a special tribute to entertainers such as Josephine Baker, Adelaide Hall and Elisabeth Welch, and Stephen will also remember his Aunt Esther, a black Londoner who served as a firewatcher during the Blitz.
