From the Department for Transport press release just arrived in my inbox:
"Mr Hoon confirmed Government support for a third runway at Heathrow airport but not for "mixed mode" which would have seen the two existing runways used more intensively"
Off topic, but wouldn't the £12 billion that's gone into an ineffective VAT cut have been better spent towards integrating our railways with the European high speed network? Would reduce the need for airport expansion, inject loads of money into the economy, create/sustain a lot of jobs, be a lot greener and improve the country's creaking infrastructure. Too obvious perhaps?
