The report on Thursday's demo outside the Board of Governors' meeting contains a quote from Dr Markos Koumaditis, assistant to the vice-chancellor. He said that 'the vice-chancellor is in ongoing discussions with the unions to explore moving towards local pay negotiations.'
In line with Dr Koumaditis's words, and similar words from the VC, the opposition of the unions at LSBU should mean a halt to moves to local pay bargaining. Yet, on Friday the VC announced the result of the Board's discussions, namely, that the university will in fact institute local pay bargaining for 2010-11.
It is hard to see how the local unions can avoid a dispute over what is a fundamental issue for trade unions.
