To be clear, the blue tower is a now-abandoned proposal from a few years back.

The bottom left image shows what is now proposed.

Can someone please explain this sudden proliferation of hotels around Waterloo?

When the Eurostar used to come here, there were scarcely any; now it goes to St Pancras, this area fairly bristles with hotels. Doesn't make any sense to me. Could the Jubilee line (for access to the Olympic park) be the attraction?

A bit more info here:

The development is quite large and encompasses The Fire Station as well as the buildings in between and to the rear.

What a dreadfully bland piece of legoland architecture. Something similar to the very pleasant new brick hotel on St George's Circus would be ideal for this site imo.

La Martinet makes a very good point, surely there cannot be sufficient demand for the number of hotels opening or proposed in SE1?

There's a target of something like 25,000 extra hotel rooms by 2012 for the Olympics - not sure who concluded that or how or even why Waterloo seems to be a feature. One thing's pretty clear, that is one uninspiring design - are there really architects with so little imagination?

and after they build all these hotels , come 2013 does waterlooo area become a desolate wasteland of empty, underused hotels? how much proper town planning actually goes on?
very little, one would think
