I wonder if anyone could help me. I'm tracing my family tree and have discovered that my gt uncle EDWARD SPECKMAN died in Camberwell April-June 1940. He came from Stepney and was aged 26. I'm trying to find out how he died but have reached a brick wall. Thanks

Hi Lizzy,

your first port of call should be getting hold of the death certificate - you can do this online now by going to GRO certificates That will give you the cause of death, place of death, and name of the person who reported it and whether they were present at the death. You'll also get the age and occupation as reported.
I had a quick look in the Times database, with no luck. If there was an inquest it might have been reported in the local paper - South London Press is the one to check. I'm not sure if Southwark Council Local History Library have copies on microfilm or not, but you could try the British Library Newspaper Library at Colindale.

Hope this helps, and good luck!
