I have just bought (on E~Bay) some Woods Ivory Ware China.
On the bottom it is stamped "Manufactured for S.B.L. Elephant Pottery S.E.1
This china was made in approx 1930.
Does anyone know anything about this pottery,or why Woods should have been making china for it.
Any help would be appreciated.

I have checked out an indented (pressed into wet clay) pottery mark
on an old bedwarmer, and came upon this comment on this forum.
I found a pottery mark
which had been found "on Mann, Crossman, and Paulin Lid, 1937",
this must be this Brewery, "In 1808 the Albion Brewery was built near the old Mile End Turnpike by the landlord of the Blind Beggar, Richard Ivory."
The Mann Crossman Paulin names were new partners/owners.
Anyway, I want to know more.
The quote in the original post says "Manufactured for S.B.L. Elephant Pottery S.E.1 "
S.B.L. stands for, I think, SHORTER BROTHERS LIMITED.
So, after trawling through my explanation, does anyone know more please.
My reason for asking is that Shorter is my maiden name, and I was born in Hackney, and am doing my Family History

Just what I need...a project! Lol

Lots of shorter names on various sites name father and son etc. All relating to potteries, some in Midlands. Will have another scout around later.

The local history section of John Harvard Library on Borough High St has lots of potentially useful info if you're able to get there... Copies of Post Office directories etc.
