The mayor also wears the chain of office, so having a driver around helps to keep it for future mayors.

Yes, it would be embarrasing to leave the chain on the bus (or get it caught in your bike chain, which I'm always doing with my trousers).

9H and LG08SXD is parked in Barnham Street. In the current financial climate every penny should be accounted for.

its a perk of the job!

Im ok with that.

Southwark council wastes far too much money on other things to be worried about that small expense!

Next time you're on a bus or the Tube, think of the mayor sitting in the comfort of a chauffeured limo, paid for by you. Incidentally, when cutbacks are made to services, I imagine you won't have any objections.

10:45, limo is still parked unattended.

i don't think there can be any excuse for any council car expenses - even boris cycles around!

last year, when i still had the patience to trawl through the 'transparency' documents (misnomer for lists of spendings of over 500), there was a significant, although never explained, amount of money spent on various motorised vehicle transport providers. including a (i think) single payment to a specifically limo service (special occasion?!).

the only two councillors i'd seen cycle to meeting so far are cllr mohammed & cllr barber (although i gather fiona colley does too, at least sometimes).

As someone who deals with a lot of local government data, these are (usually) taxis hired to take seriously disabled children to school.

beingjdc - i did think a lot of the transport expenses would indeed be for transporting children, elderly and disabled. there's no way of knowing though. on a related note it could be argued that council should require their transport contractors to use electric vehicles for this, but that's a different forum thread altogether

in september 2010, however, there was a single payment of over 10,000 to a limo company (that's what the google search came up with anyways) which provides limos for corporate events, weddings, hen nights etc.

it'd actually be quite refreshing to see the mayor cycling around. with the bling.

Cllr Thornton cycles as well.

I really think these amounts are a drop in the ocean in the budget, but I agree on the electric cars, and as a cyclist I like to recruit new people to our cult.

If you're worried about it, FOI for the details of when it was under hire and how much it is costing. If it's being hired wastefully then it's quite right to seek improvement.
