This farce is still going on and in no way represents value for money for the ratepayer.

Whilst it is true that the administration has very kindly brought it down from £85,980 - £7,165 per month - in 2012/13, it remains scandalous. For the last fiscal year to April 2015, a sum of £70,682 - almost £6,000 per month - was spent on chauffeuring the mayor. Even were an executive motor leased for about £400 per month and a chauffeur employed on a full time basis at £30,000, there would still be a massive saving on the current expenditure, even factoring in vehicle insurance, income tax, NI, pension contributions, etc.

At a time when the council administration is making redundancies left, right and centre, perhaps profligate spending such as this might be reviewed in order to yield some cost saving which could be used to preserve frontline roles.

Did you do an FOI for this info or is it on the website (and do you have a link)?

I didn't do the FOI - someone else did - but it is on the site. The link is here.

Edit: However, I have now done two FOIs of my own - one to Camden and the other to Sutton, just picked at random - to get some comparative figures.

Just had a response to my FOI to Sutton. The disparity between Southwark's spend and Sutton's spend couldn't be greater. This is Sutton's spend on mayoral chauffeuring for the preceding five-year period:

1/9/2010 to 31/3/2011 £13,154.04
1/4/2011 to 31/3/2012 £32,623.06
1/4/2012 to 31/3/2013 £33,705.97
1/4/2013 to 31/3/2014 £35,840.29
1/4/2014 to 31/3/2015 £38,697.44

I will post the Camden figures once I've had a response to my FOI request.

Camden Council (Labour) provides excellent value for money. It directly employs a chauffeur for the mayor (no figures specified, but obviously nowhere near Southwark's profligate spending) and its additional spend is paltry:

FOI response: wrote:
Below is Camden’s spend for taxi services used by the Mayor’s office for transport.
Yellow Cars - £1403.90 from 10.02.13 to date
WestOne Cars - £467.85 from 01.05.14 to date

Bike or public transport like everyone else please.

There is the consideration that Mayor wears a gold chain that needs protecting.
