I agree that you SHOULD be able to use your phone wherever you go, but I think that we have to be realistic and exercise some caution anywhere in London (it's not just an SE1 problem).

This is a more realistic way of looking at it and is exactly why I use mine out on Borough High Street before I turn into the paved area by the church...

If you need to make a call on your iPhone, stop for a moment stand still and look up. Be aware of your surroundings. Sorry to hear about all this

Standing by a wall, or walking along a wall reduces your vulnerability.

I think the usual advice to avoid muggings is to NOT stand or walk by a wall as you cannot escape easily. The advice is to walk near a kerb so you can move to the other side of a road or escape easily. Of course you now have to watch your phone or bag for cycle thieves but if you walk towards traffic on your side of the road it is easier. I think this is standard night time walking advice in urban areas.

I hink common sense is the best option.

Walking to work this morning I counted the amount of people I encountered towards London Bridge who were texting as they walked without looking and it's quite shocking - I think I was up to 10!

It's not fair to say that we should NEVER make phone calls/send texts while walking around London streets, but it is definitely fair to say people need to exercise common sense and be aware of their surroundings at all times.

This should emphasise the point that wandering along looking at your messages or talking on your phone is just silly...and by the way very annoying for anyone else on the pavement. NOTHING WILL HAPPEN if you dont get that message or have that conversation later when you're indoors.
