Nothing against Nando's , but Bermondsey Square is definitely not the right place for it.

No - it must be a mistake. I went to one for the first time at the weekend. I liked it but was surprised it was so expensive for fast food.

The GM of The Bermondsey Square Hotel is unaware of any such application.

Having done a bit of digging this looks more and more like a mix-up on the part of the council.

I strongly suspect that the entry in the licensing register in fact relates to the new Nando's under the railway arches between Blackfriars Road and Scoresby Street (as discussed here) and is nothing whatever to do with Bermondsey Square.

Having gone back through the last month's local papers to find the appropriate public notice, the Nando's application for Scoresby Street has exactly the same proposed hours and the same closing date for representations (10 August). The address is given correctly in the advert that appeared in the South London Press on 20 July.

Good work, James. That's reassuring.

Well, that little storm in a teacup was quite comical. I live just around the corner and for the life of me I can't see how a Nando's would be detrimental to Bermondsey Square (which I think is pretty unremarkable as urban spaces go). Why is it OK for Sainsbury's (or Del'Aziz for that matter) to have a place there, but not Nando's ?

It's not an appropriate hotel restaurant given that it only serves a very limited menu.

It is not upmarket enough.

I'd say that it is more upmarket than most of the establishments within a hundred metres of that spot. While Bermondsey Street is certainly 'upmarket', it is in stark contrast to Tower Bridge Road. Maybe a Nandos would help bridge the gap.

Anyway, it isn't happening, so nothing to worry about.

I agree, but it would be nice to think that TBR can be upgraded (kudos to the guys at Tower Tandoori for trying to make that happen).

as Manager of the Hotel, i can assure you all that we are very happy with our association with Gregg Wallace and have no intention of becoming a Nando's . I think Southwark may have got themselves a little confused.
