Just been told about the negative effects of these, especially if you live on a large estate. Are they compulsory?

I am trialling one at the moment for EDF and I didn't think they were being rolled out yet the project will start in the autumn of 2015, rather than the summer of next year. The SmartMeter replaces your original one and it's connected to a central computerised hub so there is no need for someone to come to read your meter. I'm not sure why it should have a negative effect on large estates because I assume if they have their own meters now they would still have their own SmartMeters. I think they would probably be compulsory in time though.

On Tuesdays bbc news they can be hacked..the article I was reading before mentioned the harmful physical effects caused when you have large amounts of meters concentrating in one area. I suppose think of mobile phone masts?
