Alas that pub has always been a failure, hard to understand when next door the Wetherspoons is rocking..
And of course we'd all rather it was a lively going concern. I know I'm the last person who should be complaining, having been so gung ho all these years about the Elephant regeneration. Be careful what you wish for....Jackie Rokotnitz.

It might not be all glitzy and glamorous and more on the rough side, but the license of the previous owners I believe has been revoked. I think it's important to save and has alot of potential with the right owners running the place. Another bland estate agents which has no benefit for the community living there is the last thing needed in this very prominent spot. It's an important sight and needs, in my opinion, to be retained as a community assent. The strata has 2 empty units beneath for 5 years now. Why doesn't Foxton make use of them rather than contribute to the destruction of the areas history. Ifor one will be sighing the petition to retain the pub.

Great point re the units by Strata.
I took a look at the item on the Southwark council website about registering a community asset but it seemed to be only groups that could make the nomination. Have I misunderstood?
You mention a petition - can anyone share a link please?

The exisitng bar has nothing to do with the history of the elephant and castle. Can someone explain why its the most wonderful bar/place? I would rather is became a Foxtons, at least it would not be an eyesore and a magnet for unsociable drinker. PROS have you ever visited or been a regular at this bar? Whats your motive? sometimes you've just got to move on...

What rubbish, a business can move to whatever premises they want if they have the right planning (as they do). Business select the location because they want to be in a prominent place. I want London businesses to survive and provide jobs. So if someone can make a go of that location, then I say give them a chance. Have you or any once else thought about raising the cash and making an offer for the site and turning the pub around?

You all make good points.

Personally I think that, given that there has been an inn named The Elephant and Castle for a very long time (centuries, a fact that most historians agree is why the Newington area received its E&C moniker), there should still be a public house of the same name.

But please: let it be a good pub, and not the squalid dive that has just lost its licence due to a punter being stabbed with a pen (reminds me of Scorsese's Casino).

Put an offer in and make it successful!
