Hey guys,

I'm fairly new to London and am currently looking around for a place to rent. I have initially set my sights on a property on Spa Road, but have not yet jumped at the opportunity as I was not too sure as to the safety of this particular area. Or more specifically, I was wondering how safe it would be travelling to the tube and back at night? My partner is accompanying me and will often be going to and from home late at night for work.

It would be much appreciated if you guys could please provide me with some insight!

Thanks for your help in advance.

It's a million times better than other parts of London. Go for it, just use your common sense and don't flash your Rolex 3am!

You can look at the local crime map on here, if you enter the postcode -

In short, though, it's much like anywhere in London - it's not totally safe but I've lived here for a few years now and never experienced any issues.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I just wanted to make sure that if we both individually walked back home in a suit at night we wouldn't look out of place!

We've lived in around the corner from Spa Road for 2 1/2 years and had no trouble walking around that area late-ish.

Actually, wearing a suit is better protection than casualwear (particularly if branded).

Rightly or wrongly, many criminals think that the police will do a better job of investigating the offence, and also that the suited victim is more likely to report the crime.

This applies to everywhere, not just SE16.

I lived in SE1 for a few years, on and around Bermondsey Street, Long Lane and Tooley St, before moving to SE16. We are now in Lynton Road and feel safer there at night than I ever did in SE1 if I'm honest. Before we moved we also checked all the crime statistics and you are far more likely to be a victim of crime if you live on or around Tooley St than you are where we live now. Opportunistic thieves seemed to target tourists and people on their phones leaving London Bridge mainly. Also I have witnessed far less vandalism and car crime in this area, in fact I think I have barely seen any.

Ive lived here for 8/9 years now and on spa road for 5. It has gone much more upmarket, spreading out from Bermondsey Street but I dont necessarily think that has improved crime rate per se in the area but it has changed the atmosphere at night time as there are a lot more people coming and going from bermondsey tube to spa road under the arches. I used to call my boyfriend now husband at night when I used to get off a tube after 11 and he would come and meet me but now with the amount of people - suited or otherwise - dont do that.

That said the tubes in the morning are now absolutely rammed and the area has got so much more busier that Im finding it impossible to get round.

SE16 is, well, sixteen times more dangerous than the wonderful SE1. That's all.

That is flippant and untrue. Look at the crime maps. There is higher crime on tooley than around bermondsey spa. The unfortunate murder last weekend - shad thames. Also the only incident I have had anecdotally in my time of living here was being attacked by a commuter outside waterloo in a suit at 9am in the morning, you can find the story in my previous threads.
