Not B & Q, but I took my Fiat to an Italian car specialist at Catford Bridge today, for a service and its annual M.O.T.
It happens to be next to a Wickes store.
As I drove in, there were around 8-10 guys standing around, they all looked in my direction, perhaps wondering if there may be a job in the offing.
After I drove past Wickes, they went back to talking among themselves.
After dropping the car off, I walked back to Catford Bridge station, or maybe Catford, I'm not sure, to catch the train to New Cross, then switch to the Overground to Rotherhithe.
They glanced in my direction again, but there were no catcalls, clicking, or whistling, maybe I'm getting too old, goddamn it.

This store is so important to locals , Im in Kennington and besides argos , this is the biggest store around ... Every diy item, pot, plant and piece of garden furniture came from here... where would I go? Plus it's so convenient , right next to the pet shop and McDonald's which I need to bribe my son to go with me! !

Went down yesterday to Pets at Home. Was surprised to find a policeman in the carpark. All the guys looking for work seemed to be avoiding the carpark itself and were sitting outside by the McDs.

There was an immigration raid there early in the morning a week or so ago (I forget exactly when) but there were police, UK Boarder Agency people and private security guards all over the place; they were taking photos of the people who hang around looking for work etc.

Since then I've noticed that there appear to be a number of private security guards that are specifically keeping the groups out of the car park. I walk past B&Q to and from work each day.

Credit to B&Q for installing guards. They keep the car park safe and even helped me load my car the other day when I had bought a bit too much. Hope the store is here to stay for a long time.

Although I rarely use B & Q -perhaps a couple of times a year - it is very useful but never very pleasant. I hope it does remain where it is with its close neighbours of Halfords, Asda and Currys/PC World across the road.
I do think we should blame the people who employ the shady looking characters, who hang around looking for work, as well as B & Q for not having cleared them from the car park years ago.
It would appear that employing such people means they are taken advantage of by those who employ them such as low wages, no N.I. no H & S, no responsibilty as to their current and future welfare, a situation even worse than zero hour contracts.
Employing them probably encourages illegal immigrants, tax evasion, extends the black economy, and is of use to those claiming benefits as unemployed.
So B & Q clearing them out of their car park would be more than just getting rid of an intimidating nuisance they would be doing all of us a favour

I can see the convenience of a large B&Q, but to be honest, I find the staff undertrained and unhelpful, the stock range is ridiculously small considering how large the shop is. I tend to avoid it now and instead go to my local independent hardware shop on Southwark Park road. They seem to have all the DIY equipment that B&Q has plus all the ironmongery and paint mixing, most importantly if you ask a question you don't get the slack jawed uncomprehending stare that you would generally get in B&Q.
Lidl and Aldi both stock a good range of gardening equipment and plants (in season), although I grant you shopping there has a whole other set of challenges.
