A lovely old David Greig shop sign has been revealed during a refurb of the dry cleaners at 257 Old Kent Road. Seems to have been a popular grocery chain that closed in the 60s, and at one point had its HQ on Waterloo Road.

For some reason the final bracket after 'supermarket' isn't being recognised as part of the web address - you may need to type it in separately to the address bar.

Thanks. Yes, must be some quirk of the coding on this forum. I'm sure folks will find the Wikipedia page if they want to read it.

What great chance survivors!. David Greig used to be good but moved into supermarkets and then lost out in the 1980s to the emergence of the big four.

The former HQ is what is now Wellington House, almost nextdoor to the old Bar and Kitchen (now Hello Darling?), and is part of the NHS management/Department of Health estate.

Hi there, I uploaded the photo to Wikipedia after noticing the sign, I must say I was struck at how bright and bold the lettering is. Having not known of David Greig before hand I presumed it was freshly painted!

A couple of other shops on this stretch of Old Kent Road have had refurbs recently revealing old signs (Quickly covered up and or damaged). I wonder why the history of these shops (Frontages, surrounds, ornaments) aren't deemed worthy of any protection by Southwark Council?
