Dear Loafer,
Thankyou for those excellent web sites - they have answered all my questions. It now looks as though none of the present buildings were there in 1848. #9 and #12 Penton Place might even have been simply semi-rural cottages. I like the fact that there was a menagerie across the road - although it was probably pretty smelly back then.
