Just a quick note to say that the old Goose and Firkin pub opposite the South Bank University is up and running now as the Duke of York, unforunately it has a big name brewery behind it, Shepherd Neame, but at least it is quite decent inside and will be open in the weekends.

OK, Shepherd Neame may not be Britain's smallest brewery but it's hardly a Grand Met or Whitbread PLC. In fact it claims to be Britain's oldest brewer (since 1698), is still family run, and it produces fine beers. Don't knock it, could've been worse. And before you ask, no I don't work for Shepherd Neame!

definitely could have been worse - Simon the Tanner is a pretty nice pub after all.

i also liked The Duke of York - friendly bar staff and nice couches (not that i got to try them out!). it's early days yet but it seemed like a big improvement on the goose & firkin.

It might be an improvement on the Goose and Firkin, but it didn't open up in the weekend.
