It is a shame that some businesses are seemingly afraid of relying on their offerings and resort to somewhat underhand measures to promote their business. It simply smacks of insecurity in their product and their efforts would be better spent in embracing this forum and listening to genuinely held views and customer observations.

As an aside, I found out today that information of the type JQL refers to is sometimes called "astroturf"....

...because it's a synthetic attempt to build a "grass roots" movement in a local area.

Where has he been rude about the restaurant. Have I missed something?

Oops, you can ignore me, I was getting confused. Henrythev's comments certainly did not make me want to go back to Magdalen though. I mean, I would return on the merits of the food alone, but I wholeheartedly agree that it would be pretty stupid for a restaurant manager/ member of staff to defend themselves so vociferously and just plain rudely against valid critisms when newly opened. A balanced response would be fine, if the person stated that they were the manager or whatever, but if this really is Magdalen posting here, we may soon go along the lines of Top Notch!

I am truly amazed at this discussion, I make an observation about another observation, okay maybe the sarcasm, which is all it was, was a bit over the top but no serious response was made to my point either in my first or second posting. Then having being accused of being aggressive and venomous we get 4 pages of me and others being accused of everything it seems short of murder and nothing to do with the original comments about hygiene at all. My serious comments about relative hygiene which is what we all live under, like it or not, were never discussed at all in any serious way I just got foul language and really snide comments from all but a couple of posters and theres probably still more to come.
Well this experience has certainly put me off from returning to this site - and make of that what you will...............

henrythev, if you are genuine and you have no axe to grind, I'm sure everyone is sorry that they doubted you.

1. The questioning response you got was born of long experience of people who think it's clever to defend/promote their own businesses on the forum without coming clean about their connection to the establishment under discussion. It's happened many times and people have developed an instinct for spotting it. Obviously this doesn't have a 100% success rate!

2. It seems to me that although we want to be welcoming to new users on the forum, it has to be a two-way thing. Anyone who walks into a pub and starts berating the regulars is likely to get short shrift.

I feel pretty saddened by reading some of these comments, I thought this was supposed to be a site where people could come to seriously critique and review a restaurant. Instead it has just turned into a slagging match about salt and pepper, hardly that significant in the great scheme of things.

I DO KNOW the owners of Magdalen, although have not made it there yet myself and know them to be honest people who are passionate about cooking good food for people and who would be very saddened to read their plight has turned into this.

I would like to recommend to the people that run this site to remove this discussion, that has absolutely nothing to do with reviewing the restaurant and get back to what this is supposed to be about.... Reviewing the Restaurant!

OK, I've done some tidying up of the 'reviews' of Magdalen and Chicken Sizzler.

But I did want to share this review because it made me smile:

If someone who has dined at Magdalen and isn't connected to the management would like to post a review in the restaurant section that would be great.

I vote we commission lucas to review some more restaurants. Very funny.

...if you press it, they will come.

Fay Maschler gives Magdalen 4 stars out of 5 in today's Standard, stating that it "... comes very close indeed to my blueprint for the ideal restaurant."

Shame that this post got so hung up about the salt and pepper and I, for one, would like to congratulate them on such a glowing review.

And no, I don't have any connection to the place. It's just nice to see a new addition to the SE1 area doing so well.
