'New Bermondsey' is a reference to Welling/Mottingham in old Bermondsey

By New Bermondsey I meant the bohemian buzz around Bermondsey High Street but thanks for the local history point of correction. As Leathermarket Street was, for centuries, at the heart of the leather and tanning industry, Charles Dickens remembers the area as full of evil smells from the animal pens, slaugherhouses and the substances in which the hides were processed. The existing Leather Exchange complex, which includes the pub, dates back to 1879 but it replaced an older building on the site. It's a shame the original clock tower has been demolished.

we're going there for our book club meeting - so we'll report back on it aftewards.

it used to do good food, and i don't think it looked that tired.

they did do a nice pint of Chiswick Discovery, i hope that's still there.

Osamede, there was a clock on the little round tower at the Weston Street /Leathermarket Street junction, the clock face is visible in a lot of old photos,I don't know when it was removed, long ago I suspect.I must pop in and check out the pub if it has changed hands again.Does anyone know if they are doing food?

There's a picture of the original clock turret at:

Thanks for posting the picture Lang Rabbie. There's a big framed copy of it up in the pub too. The impressive building is virtually unchanged apart from the missing clock tower. It's now occupied by lots of small company's offices/design studios etc, just as the former warehouses up the road are now developed as flats and penthouse apartments.

JonR,

My mate kept the beer at the Leather Excahnge over the past year or so and won an award for it. However, since it changed hands he no longer works there and I can't vouch for the quality of it now. I went in there a few weeks ago (just before Christmas) and the only food they seem to do now are varieties of burgers. The food was excellent two leaseholders back, but has been rather iffy since.

Love this place.

Had walked past it a couple of times before the change of ownership and had throught about the plase since then. However noticed it was open yesterday and went in for lunch.

Food was great without been overly done, more good pub grub than gastro.

In fact loved it so much ended up going back there in the evening for a pint when I found the Hide/Wool Pack and Garison packed.

you might have seen some of us there then - we were celebrating a birthday party in the upstairs room, but were buying drinks in the normal bar.
