The leaflet doesn't mention anything else about retail at the Plaza.

Yes there is quite a bit of retail space. The NEW proposal actually has more retail, (and better) than the original, because it has phased out the offices and the hotel, and rearranged everything. The one good thing about the revised plan was the improved retail space. The traders from the shopping centre will get first refusal on the plaza places, athough it remains to be seen if these will be a)suitable and b)affordable. However, the replacement of the hotel by a large student hostel is, to my mind, a bad move for the "balance" of the new development overall, and furthermore what REALLY bothers me is the moving of goalposts mid term. If every project within the development stops half way through and the developer decides that instead of - say - a cinema, they'll make a casino, or instead of a school they're putting a bingo hall, the whole concept will be a)a mess and b)delayed interminably. Have a big meeting about all this at the end of the month...will report.

so that clarifies it then...market square will be offered first to existing traders at the market outside the E&C shopping centre, whilst those retailers operating within the centre such as the Charlie Chaplin pub and Castle Tandoori as well as established high street names such as Abbey National & Iceland.....

Jackie by the way do you know how long the advertising is staying up outside the elephant pub on the corner of the MCH site??? It doesnt exactly look very attractive but presumably it is a short term measure?

Good point. The horrible ad. hoardings have been there for nearly a year. Every time I go in there to ask what on EARTH the point is they keep saying they're coming down any moment....but I dare say they make good money renting the space out. But I quite agree they look awful. Am hoping that Mr. St. George will put in a complaint once the tower on our parking lot is being marketed. But as soon as I'm back I'll be on the case again. alas it's an independent organisation and NOT part of the MCH complex so they can do what they bloody well like.

I'm hoping the block can be compulsory purchased to give the council a bit more space on that corner when the roadabout gets revamped.....unlikely i know!

Although drifting from this thread, on this subject you might be interested to read that someone has applied for a HUGE advertising banner to be put over Draper House, facing the southern roundabout. The Council has (IMO rightly) refused planning permission but there is now an appeal against this decision:

Application No.: 07-AP-0732

Location: DRAPER HOUSE, 20 ELEPHANT AND CASTLE, LONDON SE1

Proposal: The display of an illuminated temporary scaffold shroud banner with advert measuring 40 metres in height by 19 metres in width and 20 metres from the ground on the north facing elevation (facing the roundabout)

Personally I'm not against using scaffolding for advertising ifand only if it is truely temporary. All too often the revenue from these ads seems to be a disincentive to get the job done quickly and the scaffolding taken down. The scaffolding and hoarding on the Elephant & Castle pub seems like one of these scams to me... just what are they doing behind it?

I have heard from a friend at Southwark Council that Pizza Hut is moving into this development and a large Sommerfield store.

Jackie mentioned a 5/6 screen cinema on another thread, which sounds good to me.

The work has ground to halt on the site again now, hopefully it'll get going soon..
