At the risk of sounding a bit sad, I'm SO HAPPY! M & S Simply Food has opened at the BP Station and it's everything you might expect and more (I don't have shares - honest!). If this doesn't drag up the standards in local retail outlets, I don't know what will. Bring it on!!

Any notices about when they are opening?

I suppose if you like vastly over priced, plastic and cardboard, microwave dinners it'll be a boon. However, what we really need is some places that sell real food at affordable prices that doesn't come wrapped in costly instant rubbish.

I suppose we can all dream on.

yeah, I hunted in vain at the Charing X branch for any veg that a) hadn't been flown half way across the world or b) wasn't grossly over packaged, and failed.

There was a really interesting article about food miles in the Economist a while ago:

Totally agree about the packaging though.

Carry on down the Old Kent Rd and you'll find plenty of places that do offer "real" food that doesn't come pre-wrapped.

It's nice to have a choice though.

Why, I wonder, do I have a problem with M&S food? It's just too shiny and too perfect looking and certainly too pricey. But I think it's probably a silly fixation on my part.

I'm afraid that's a bit far from here. More's the point I don't have the required Kevlar helmet, bullet proof vest and baseball bat. :D

No doubt they specialise in the same wonderfully packaged things that Sainsbury's in Borough High Street do. Things like a packaged bundle of about 6 grapes or a sliced apple labeled "ready to eat" and sold for prices like 1.29. No doubt this will soon be followed by sliced bananas with the same label. I mean how lazy or anal are some people that eating an apple in the manner human kind has for thousands of years is just too messy or crude? Will they want the grapes peeled as well in future?
