I notice that some people are persisting in calling Empire Square Tabard Square. And whenever it's called Empire Square - as in the recent story on this site about the new Long Lane Tesco - it's added that Empire Square is aka Tabard Square.
The address in question is Empire Square, not Tabard Square. I'd be the first to suggest that Empire Square is a less appealing name, without the historical integrity of Tabard Square, and the developers were apparently keen on the latter. In the end the name Tabard Square was squashed by Royal Mail, though, who insisted it would be too confusing. Hence the less attractive and frankly rather pretentious alternative.
Nevertheless, it would be quite nice if people could get their heads round the fact that Empire Square is its name. I say this having twice in recent weeks given people directions and been told that what I called Empire Square was "actually called Tabard Square". If only!
