I'd be happy if people could just learn to spell, talk and write correctly.

The introduction of computer spell checkers has given my generation no hope!

My pet hate is the mis-spelling of there, their, they're

AND

people spelling words how they say them

agggggghhhhhhhhhhh

I still haven't quite got my head around apostrophies!
(only when used as possesive ones that is - as I know about using them in words with missing letters or for 'it is', or 'it has')

apostrophies' are my downfall, I stick them' in all inappropiate' places'.!

I used to do that in French lessons - if I couldn't remember whether the accent was an upwards or a downwards one, I'd draw a straight one above the letter. It would get questioned at most, but never downmarked...

Jan - had a though about the 'text' matter. How about 'texten'???

Sounds ok (though not necessarily right) in two different contexts:

"I texten" - or, "he is texten" (as in "did you text him?")

Works, no?

Would it be correct to say that Jan 'threaded' this subject?

At work I seem to have started world war three with this one !

they are all at loggerheads about the ' texted' thread... while I'm at it Deirdre , is threadled the needle correct? my mum always said that..:-)
