Is it too early to start an "SE1 Cider 2009" thread yet?
If we do have enough interested people, perhaps it's time to think about making our own press and/or scratter (which we could make in conjunction with the Farm, perhaps?).
There are some fairly simple plans for presses and scratters freely available on the net. Requiring not much more than some basic carpentry, a little stainless steel fabrication, a cheaply-sourced hydraulic jack, and a motor of some sort (for a scratter).
a hydraulic jack, and a motor - that sounds like you're thinking of taking all the hard work and fun out of the scratting/pressing process.
I'd be interested in a joint DIY project of some sort to fabricate these items, then we wouldn't have to rely on the hire from Richard in Cheam.
It's never too early to start a cider thread.
Do you want me to contact the farm again, to see if they're interested? They do already have a scratter and press, which is sufficient for their current crop of apples though, so persuading them to make a bigger, faster, better one might be difficult.
