The 'nomadic allotments' were created by Welsh architecture students two years ago as part of the London Festival of Architecture.

Since the festival they have been used by local residents and schoolchildren.

On Tuesday the early years and reception pupils from the two schools were shown around the allotments, learning about colour and the smells of herbs such as lavender and rosemary.

Borough Market gardeners were on hand to help the children plant their very own saplings, which the children then took back to school to care for as part of their studies.

"It's amazing that the children from Snowfields and other local schools have been able to get involved in this project and more importantly use the local amenities right here on their doorstep at Borough Market," said Emma Svensson, teacher at Snowfields Primary School.

Borough Market managing director Keith Davis added: "We are delighted that local schools have been able to join us today and get stuck in to helping us plant our allotments.

"The market is proud of its place at the heart of the community and that we are able to share the passion and knowledge that the market offers in inspiring children to learn about food and sustainability."
