Excellent option
We haven't been to Waterloo Bar & Kitchen for years so gave it a try this week. Went mid-week at 7.30pm when the Old Vic crowd had gone. It was busy but not too hectic - a good atmosphere. The service was excellent and the food very good. Would definitely go back again.
A lucky find
I originally visited the Waterloo area to eat at Waterloo Bar and Grill, but it seems to have closed down and been replaced by one of those ghastly chain places! And so I decided to explore a little further down the road and I came across Waterloo Bar and Kitchen. A brief glance at the menu and the nod from my girlfriend found us inside the rather busy restaurant. However, the smiling manager seated us quickly, our drink order was taken in minutes and the food not long after. We soon learnt that the business was due to the Old Vic theatre being next door, and we were thrilled that, once the restaurant emptied before it's second rush, we were offered a more comfy booth table.
We went for the mussels and the pate to start with, both were excellent and tasty. The main meals of the lemon sole and lamb (both from the specials board) were also perfect - my sole was cooked to perfection. We had decided to take go for starters over dessert, but after seeing the next door table receive a warm chocolate brownie, we had no option but to share one with some double espressos - heaven! We washed the food down with a rather lovely Chablis and thoroughly enjoyed our evening!
Very good
Very rarely eat here but popped in last night and had a lovely meal. It was nearly empty at 9pm but the place still felt warm and welcoming. The two staff who served us were amazing - very professional but also warm and chatty. Food was beautifully cooked and I thought good value. An excellent meal and will be going back again.
Hugely variable
Some times it can be charming, and the food spot-on ... had a really memorable roast red pepper and tomato soup and on another occasion some excellent fish, but too often it's ungenerous portions of indifferently-prepared ingredients - a salad of asparagus and goats cheese had three flimsy reeds of asparagus and a mere smear of fromage.

Could do better. Much better. Started out as a great local, but now an overpriced pre-theatre trap.
