St George's Day at Borough Market

As patron saint of farmers, shepherds and butchers as well as England, St. George is a character well suited to being celebrated at Borough Market

This festival of food, music, cookery demonstrations and traditional entertainment will also involve a visit from some of the Market's Catalonian friends, marking the fact that St. George is also patron saint of that region.

The Green Market and new Market Hall will be filled with the sounds and smells of both cultures as Borough Market traders celebrate, with specialities including
traditional pie and mash, a special "all English breakfast bap" and S George's Day cakes.

There will also be free demonstration kitchens throughout the day showing you how to create both traditionally English and classic Catalan dishes.  The festivities will be set to a soundtrack of music from Folk Dance Remixed – giving a hip hop spin to traditional English folkdance and the London Catalan choir.

The exchanging of roses and books as a sign of appreciation is something of a Catalan custom and the UK delegation of the Government of Catalonia will perform the ritual with members of the public, while traders will hand out roses to revellers throughout the day.
