The Young Vic leaps into the world of dance in a trail blazing co-production with Sadler's Wells.
Director Daniel Kramer brings Modest Mussorgsky's classic piano suite to life in a dance theatre production with choreographer Frauke Requardt and poet James Fenton.
Mussorgsky wrote Pictures from an Exhibition, his much loved piano composition, in 1874 in commemoration of his close friend the artist Viktor Hartmann. The suite consists of ten piano pieces each inspired by a different painting or design from Hartmann's works.
Mussorgsky's vivid and evocative score is rooted in the Russian folklore of his childhood. Epic themes and dark passions are encrypted in the musical sketches: worship and domination, love and loss, death and commemoration, the witch Baba Yaga and Mother Russia.
This graphic, intensely visual piece will throw new light on the passion and pains of Mussorgsky's intimate life, in particular his pursuit of ideal love.
The cast of actors and dancers includes Conor Doyle, Kath Duggan, Edward Hogg, Rob McNeil, Michela Meazza, Inn Pang Ooi, Vinicius Salles and Margarita Zafrilla Olayo.
