Elephant & Castle Families

Leigh Hirst was commissioned in 1994 by the Elephant & Castle Shopping Centre to take photographs of its customers. She placed a sofa in the mall, set up a light and spent two days recording a cross-section of the local community. Six years later, the photographer started to track down her subjects and asked them to write comments on their portraits. Of the 30 pictures in this exhibition, the identity of eight remains unknown.

  • Leigh Hirst's photos can be seen at the Museum of London on London Wall from 17 May to 2 July.
