Orbit House demolition under way

Work has begun on demolishing Orbit House opposite Southwark Station to make way for Southpoint. The new building has been designed by Alsop & Stormer to look like a tipped up glass box with the front and back walls sloping backwards.

Earlier suggestions that the ground floor of the office block would have a supermarket have proved inaccurate. There is provision for just one retail unit described as coffee shop size.

Demolition should be completed by May in time for the building programme to begin in July. Completion is scheduled for 2004. Residents in Scoresby Street, currently complaining about vibration from demolition work, will enjoy winter sun for the last time next year.

The 11 storey building is also due to block panoramic views of St Paul's and the City from Nelson Square flats.

Orbit House, on the site of The Ring chapel building which was used for boxing matches, housed the India Office Library which is now housed in at the new British Library building at St Pancras.
