Cathedral benefactor dead

Garry Weston, inventor of the Wagon Wheel biscuit and a major Southwark benefactor, has died.

The 74 year old made a very large contribution towards the new development fund of Southwark Cathedral – hence the Garry Weston Library building on the east side of the cathedral's new courtyard.

When the millennium extension was opened last year by Nelson Mandela there were three bouquets to be presented. One was for the former President, one for the South African High Commissioner and a third for Garry Weston.

However, he was so ill that the flowers had to be sent to his bedside.
