At last! The Millennium Bridge is open

Just after 10am the Millennium Bridge was opened allowing 160 people queuing on Bankside to walk across to the City.

They met Southwark Mayor Hiliary Wines who was walking from the City side with Corporation of London 'Leader' Judith Mayhew representing the Lord Mayor. Alongside was Town Crier Peter Moore leading around 60 walkers from the St Paul's side. Soon Southwark's Met Police were passing their City colleagues in their Roman style helmets.

Bridge architect Norman Foster also walked from the north bank before fielding numerous interviews with foreign TV news crews.

Those arriving on the City side were given leaflets about visiting St Paul's whilst Bankside visitors received money-off vouchers for Shakespeare's Globe

Within 30 minutes there were just 100 people on the bridge which had hardly
wobbled during its third opening ceremony.
